Temporal and Spectral Analysis of X-Ray Afterglows of GRBs Observed by BeppoSAX
Abstract
Afterglow sources contain critical information on the origin of GRBs and on the nature of the explosion. We present a systematic study of 13 X-ray afterglows observed by BeppoSAX. The analysis aims at comparing results with standard fireball model predictions for a spherical and for a collimated fireball expansion. If the GRB energy emission is collimated we estimate a lower limit on the opening angle of the jet: {θ > 12°. This constrains the possibility to decrease the total GRB energy by a collimation factor of ≤ 300.
